01 The positioning

A connective layer, not a replacement.

Manchester's technical communities are already strong. Groups like OWASP Manchester, 2600 Manchester, Cybrewery, and many others have been running meetups, talks, and gatherings for years.

The North West has not been short of community. It has been short of one specific thing: a recurring, cross-disciplinary format where adjacent disciplines can meet under one roof.

BSides Manchester is reviving the BSides tradition in this city while complementing the communities already active across it. We are not the missing thing. We are a connective layer, a place where security practitioners, software engineers, platform and infrastructure engineers, architects, product and operations teams, and researchers can learn from one another.

The previous BSides Manchester was a separate organisation that stopped hosting events in 2020. This is a new team and a new legal entity, building something modest, sustainable, and additive to the ecosystem that already exists.

Ground Truth, October 2026.

On Thursday 1 October 2026, around 70 people joined us at the GM Digital Security Hub (DiSH) in Manchester for Ground Truth: How Things Really Get Built, Broken, and Fixed.

Kay Daskalakis moderated a practitioner panel with Rio Sherri (NetSPI), Andy Shaw (Loxam), Graham Cook (Sedex) and John Watson (Swamp Club), followed by audience Q&A. Equixly then ran a live CTF alongside food and networking.

Thanks to DiSH for the venue, PortSwigger for refreshments and swag, Axiom Breach for AV, and Equixly for the CTF.

Our first night was the 29 April 2026 preview night at AJ Bell HQ. Read about it in the events archive.
